Snowy Forest

Winter Lab

Winter lab replaces family forest school when the weather shifts from January through March. A hands-on ecology class is hard to pull-off when the critters are hibernating and the plants are dormant. Instead, winter lab offers a similar outdoor science class highlighting scientific concepts and physical science. Designed for families with children ages 3-10 to participate in together, our 2-hour weekly winter class features a warming fire and our heated schoolhouse building with plenty of opportunities to warm up when needed. Every week we will learn a new scientific concept and do hands-on experiments outside together. Bundle up and dress for the weather! Each 4-week session costs $110 per family, no matter family size. The fee includes a 2-hour weekly class and any supplies needed for the experiments. Students must attend with an adult. All ages welcome! Registration isn't complete until payment is received.

Our curriculum is specifically designed to highlight scientific concepts with seasonal experiments to provide ample opportunity for hands-on learning. Using nature as a catalyst for exploring new ideas helps students practice the scientific method in real-life situations. These experiences help drive new concepts home better than textbooks ever could.

Each class at winter lab will start around the fire. We will play a group game, have a brief discussion of our concept of the week, and then head to the forest to start experimenting! After experiments are complete, the class is encouraged to work on group projects exploring the concept in their own way. The warming fire and school house can be used at any time during class to warm up.

The family cost for a month-long session is a flat rate of $110 dollars for the digital curriculum, experiment supplies and forest school meetings. Payments can be sent via zelle or paypal. Paypal transactions will be issued a 4.5% service fee. To avoid service fees, a digital zelle payment can be sent to Paypal transactions can be paid below. Winter lab includes access to our forest school facility, a weekly 2-hour class that lasts a month, a book list that can help drive learning at home, and a digital curriculum file sent to your email every week. Each class will feature a warming fire, and sometimes we will cook over the fire as well! All supplies for warming fires, experiments and class projects are included.

This winter will be chilly! Be sure to always dress for the weather, and pack hot snacks to help warm you up. Hot soup, hot chocolate and tea, or anything you can consume from a thermos is recommended. Children frequently get dirty and wet while playing in the forest. Always keep dry clothes and a blanket in the car for emergencies. We often play in creeks, build forts and bridges, and follow the children's lead on what to explore and discover. One of our trained forest school teachers will lead the family forest school session and facilitate each activity and transition.

Each Winter Lab class will take place at our new private forest school site. Our site features lots of parking space, a heated schoolhouse, a creek, a treehouse and two fire-pits surrounded by woodlands. We are conveniently located just off I-355 and I-80 near Francis, Schoolhouse and Parker Rd in Mokena. Our address is 12823 W Regan Rd, Mokena, IL, 60448.
